An Open Letter to Students...

When I read the news today it is often filled with violence, anger and fear.  These are powerful times that we live in. That is why I believe that this is the most important class that you will take in middle school.  Yes, you read that right! Your middle school history class is the most important class you will take. History allows us to look at the past in order to make sense of the present and hopefully make more informed decisions in the future.  If we live in a world where the internet is available in every country, we must understand the sheer genius and unimaginable consequences that that advent of technology has brought us. If we are talking of building walls and religious exclusion we should examine the effects of such decisions in the past.  (PS, they haven’t been good.) If we are going to call someone names we should understand the power of words in our history. If we are going to see women running for President, shouldn’t we also see the role that women have played in shaping history?

What about your own history?  How have your ancestors shaped our world?  And what about your future? How will you, yes YOU, shape the world to come?  Will you perpetuate bigotry, hatred, exclusion and self-indulgence? Will you fight for something, believe in something, take a stand?  Or will you stand by and do nothing? Like those who watched the Jews sent to death camps. Because that is the lesson of history. If you do nothing you are part of the problem.  We live in powerful times. The decisions you make will decide how the people in the future will see us. History can be a harsh judge.

You may be thinking that you are one person, that you really couldn’t care less, that you hate history.  But every single one of you makes choices every single day that affect those around you. This is the most important class you will ever take.  You will decide with your words, your choices, your vote whether the news continues to be full of violence and anger and fear, or perhaps, like those who came before us (Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi), YOU will be the change…
